Bifidobacterium animalis, the Colon & Cancer

Posted on Posted in Science

Bifidobacterium is the family of bacteria that is responsible for lining the walls of the large intestine and decreasing growth of  bad strains of bacteria. B. Animalis produce acids that reduce the body’s pH, preventing illness-causing bacteria that thrive in an alkaline environment.

The World Health Organization defines probiotics as, “Live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.” Vibe’s third ingredient, Bifidobacterium animalis, is a strain of probiotic with many digestive benefits!

B. animalis can be helpful in preventing cancer. Nitrates enter our bodies through the ingestion of food and water. The bad bacteria in our bodies can turn the nitrates into nitrites, a cancer causing substance. If the body has a healthy bacterial balance the walls of the intestine will be lined with probiotics. There will be no room for harmful bacteria to attach and they will continue to pass out of the digestive system.

B. animalis are very beneficial to the colon. Studies have shown that it significantly reduces the colonic transit time. B. animalis can serve those suffering from colitis (colon inflammation). It is also very helpful in treating diarrhea, which is a main side effect of collagenous colitis. Scientist Chr. Hansen conducted a study in 2005 and found that those who introduced B. animalis in their diet had a reduction of bowel frequency, a reduction of liquid stool and an increase in solid stool.

We have almost made it though all of our probiotic strains in the Bifidobacterium family! Stay tuned for Vibe’s last beneficial ingredient from the Bifidobacterium strain, B. longum!!
